China Mandates National Safety Standard for L3/L4 Autonomous Driving Systems, Effective July 2027
China's mandatory national standard for autonomous driving safety requirements (GB 44721—2026) has been approved and will take effect on July 1, 2027. The standard applies to vehicles with L3 and L4 highly automated driving systems (Class M and N), excluding automatic parking systems. It requires automakers to establish lifecycle safety guarantees covering product design, manufacturing and post-deployment, ensuring the autonomous system achieves safety levels at least equivalent to a competent driver without posing unreasonable risks. The standard specifies dynamic driving task requirements across scenarios and minimum risk strategy triggers. Human-machine interaction must include clear activation/deactivation prompts, and L3 systems require driver takeover monitoring. Compared to the UN ADS GTR, China's standard provides more detailed technical requirements tailored to its road traffic environment.

BYD M9 Confirmed for Australia: DM-i PHEV Minivan with 850km Combined Range
After conquering the luxury MPV market with the Denza D9, BYD is targeting the more accessible segment with the M9 (known as Xia in China), now confirmed for right-hand-drive markets including Australia. Unlike the D9 which leads with an EV option, the M9 is exclusively a plug-in hybrid, using the fifth-generation DM-i system with a 1.5L turbo four-cylinder paired to a front electric motor (272PS/315Nm supported by a 156PS/225Nm engine). Two Blade LFP battery options are offered: 20.39kWh for the Dynamic and 36.6kWh for the Premium, delivering up to 145km WLTP EV range and 850km combined. At 5,145mm long with a 3,045mm wheelbase, it is 105mm shorter and 115mm lower than the D9. The exterior adopts the Dynasty design language with a full-height grille and cascading taillights, while the interior features a 12.3-inch instrument display, 15.6-inch infotainment screen, 26-inch head-up display and zero-gravity second-row seats with nine airbags. Arriving in Australian showrooms in Q4, BYD is deploying the M9 to complete its PHEV MPV coverage across virtually every market sector, with other right-hand-drive markets potentially following.
